After the previous weeks foray into South Molton for a friendly and a biblical storm with a 54-0 nil win Kingsbridge Colts entertained Brixham Colts in the opening game of the Devon Colts Merit Table. From the kick-off a great take from Way several phases ended in Kings being penalised for holding on. The opening exchanges between the two sides were a bit error strewn at times as a sense of adventure was overdone when the more pragmatic approach may well have been the better choice.
Kings got a turnover from Fox, this resulted in a penalty taken quickly and Kings swept across the pitch and back again with multiple phases. All the hard work was then undone with numbers outside as one player drifting badly took all the space out wide. Another wide ranging attack then resulted in West going over to make it 5-0. Bit of indiscipline from Kings let Brixham in with a lineout metres out, Kings spoilt the Brixham ball with Haddy and Perring in tandem forcing a penalty as they were in on the Brixham player like a pair of terriers. Kings then went through a spell of often running the ball back at the direction of the Brixham pack who were a bulky combo and were working well in the breakdown clearing out. First up tackling from Kings got a bit sloppy as Brixham looked to be getting back into the game and Kings were penalised several times for offside. Kings then broke from their own tryline which ended with Stacey going over to make it 10-0. This appeared to spur Kings as the line speed in D improved along with tackling and pressure on the Brixham players. The first half ended with a strong run from Niblett down the touchline and support from all angles. Halftime 10-0
Halftime talk involved Kings to work on spreading the ball wide and shift the big Brixham lads round in the heat. Kings came out and started off with poor tackling and indecision at ruck time meaning Brixham getting some turnover ball. Dickens did well to clean up a kick through and make big metres running it back. From a good scrum S Jones broke through then knocked on, Brixham countered and Niblett got in to stop the attack. Kings stole a lineout which ended with Haddy going over to make it 15-0 conv. by L Jarvis 17-0. Another strong scrum gave Jones time to put a kick through for Stacey to chase, he was interfered with and a penalty try was awarded conv. by Jarvis 24-0. Brixham looked to be tiring now and Kings were stringing several phases together at will and got close to the lin on numerous occasions for a poor pass to put an end to it. The Kings bench was emptied and more multiple phases happened ending in Jarvis putting West over to make it 29-0. Kings support play was starting to really gel with trailing support players wreaking havoc in the Brixham defensive line. One in particular with a break from Niblett and Howard on at 9 supporting ended with Fox going over to make it 34-0 conv. Jarvis 36-0. Kings offloading was now really paying off. An attack deep into Brixhams half ended with a penalty to Kings Jarvis put in a cross field kick for West to go over for his third to make it 41-0. More phases with great support and offloads(one in particular from prop Dixon caught the eye) kept Brixham moving round thought they did break out and a fine tackle from Dixon stopped what looked to be a certain try. A turnover from Kings had Jones careering down field supported by Niblett who then fed Thomas to make the final score 46-0. All in all a good performance with things to work on from Kings. Each and every player made a contribution to the team effort.
