Kingsbridge U10s .v. Ivybridge U10s
Having been let down at almost the last minute by Cullompton (& not the only age group to suffer!) it took some great work by head coach Matt Partridge to secure a game against Ivybridge who had found themselves in a similar predicament.
Like Kingsbridge, Ivybridge have a strong squad with large numbers and they regard Kingsbridge as the team to beat and a good benchmark to check their form.
For the first quarter it was Kingsbridge who quickly took the lead in very muddy conditions with a strong run from half way by Rhys Stephens. Ivybridge are a well drilled outfit and having played Kingsbridge before they’d done their homework. They knew Kingsbridges danger men and attempted to mark them out of the game. This however was never going to stop Pip Burton Race who still managed to trot in 3 great trys.
Great work as always in the rucks by Matt Partridge, ably assisted by Alpheus Terblanche..Strong runs from Harry Rodwell,Max Ferguson and Tom Winzer, and great defence from Oliver Dudley.
For the second half Kingsbridge were never really in it, though not for the lack of effort. Matthew Hill, Joe Burner, Jack McGrath, Sally Jepson, Jago Wilson, Gus Howells, Matthew Potter, Finley Roberts and Stan Gerrard battled hard and we’re just able to stop Ivybridge from stealing the game. Kingsbridge 4 Ivybridge 3
For the next fixture Ivybridge fielded their tournament team in preparation for the forthcoming festivals. Although Kingsbridge were not able to field their strongest team, they did their best to oblige and a fantastic spectacle of rugby ensued. At the end it was not possible to tell one team, or even player from the other as all involved had morphed into brown dripping blobs!
It was close but Kingsbridge won 2-1 with 2 great trys from Rhys Rocket Stephens.
