Kingsbridge U9’s are Champions of Torquay Festival
This week saw Kingsbridge U9’s travelling to the English Riviera with evenly matched ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams for the Torquay Athletic Junior Easter Rugby Festival. Rapidly deteriorating weather conditions and a hastily revised programme of events meant the boys had to dig deep in order to find their best form quickly. This was not helped by the first round draw, Kingsbridge ‘A’ v Kingsbridge ‘B’; the narrow victors King’s ‘A’ scraping through by only 1 try.
Fabulous rugby ensued throughout the day despite the cold, wet, and extremely muddy conditions with outstanding team efforts from both squads. Kingsbridge ‘A’ lost by 1 try to tournament hosts Torquay in a closely fought physical encounter but Kingsbridge ‘B’ redressed the situation with an outstanding team effort to beat Torquay 3 – 1.
With the tournament being run on a points system including bonus points nobody was entirely sure who had won the day until Oliver Dudley from the ‘A’ team proudly lifted the trophy high above his head to the delight and cheers from supporters and worthy opponents alike. However, it should be noted that had Kingsbridge ‘B’ not defeated Torquay, the hosts would have claimed the trophy.
All in all a great combined squad effort proving that Kingsbridge are a force to be reckoned with and have great strength in depth. The ‘B’team were themselves narrowly squeezed into third place by the hosts preventing a 1, 2 for Kings in what turned out to be a great festival of rugby organised and run by Torquay Athletic RFC, a great club, great hosts, and fabulous rugby players. We look forward to all of our future encounters.
